I see your photos and the 8-hour trail on the web about the Rebun Island,
it's great ! As my wife and I will go Rebun-Island at the end of June.
Could you kindly tell me where can I get those information like:

*- how to join the 8-hr trail?
- Is the trail must be guided by experienced guides?
- Is a must to live in YH before we can join the trail?
- accomodation?
*- Is there any transportation means to leave Rebun-Island after the
8-hr
trail, back to Wakkanai and by the overnight train back to Sapporo

What I have found (from the book Japan by lonely Planet) is the
information on how to get there and introduced some trails for hiking
(in which I'm very interest in)

The 8 hr hike seashore trail is very famous in Rebun Island. I am not aware that there is any information of this route in Chinese written guide book. You may refer to a book ? called "Hiking in Japan" also published by lonely planet. But this book is not easily found.

The trail is not particularly difficult. If you were a keen hiker in HK, you should not feel too difficult. Don't need to climb any cliff (much leisured compared with the stream trekking mentioned in our webpage). Late June should be a good season to visit Rebun Island (also named as Flower Island). You should see a lot of flowers if you were lucky.

If you could find detail of the map and the detail route description, you could trek by yourself. But you need to take public transport to go to the most northern point of Rebun Island (most northern point of Japan, too!) by yourself. Some hikers would like to split the hike into 2 days. (because there is a place in the middle part of the trek, where you can leave the trek). But I think it is more rewarding and time- saving for a whole day 8 hr trek.

I suggest you and your wife to join a hiking group (e.g. the one organised by Youth Hostel) because the organiser would arrange transport. It is more safer if you go along with other guys in this remote seashore region. You should contact YH in Rebun Island and see whether you can join them even if you do not want to live there.

The transport to/from Wakkanai is by ship. There is a fixed time table. You should arrive Wakkanai early enough to catch a ship to the islands.

Rishiri Island is another beautiful volcanic island that you may consider to visit.

Thanks Eugene.
I've booked the Rebun YH with the help of my Japanese colleague (so lucky) and he also helped to ask the Parent of the Rebun YH that the trek actually has no Guide and a map will provide to each of the participates. So, what I want to do, may be, I ask the Parent to group my wife and I to be one group (because max. 4 persons) so with the map, I planned to complete it with 10 hours in maximum.

BTW, I've seen that you have a new Franz Josef Glacier hiking information. My wife and I also been there and have the one-day Glacier Walk also.
As you mentioned, It's Great :o)

Many Thanks. If I can get any update information of Rebun island, I will update you :o)

Dear Johnson,

Enjoy your holiday. Don't forget to try some local Japanese barbecue food after your trek in Rebun Island. It is really good.

It takes 4.5 hours to Tokyo and then 2.5 hours to Sapporo. Including transit time, if flight starts at 9:30, it will arrive Sapporo at 19:30. I will plan for a trip to Hokkaido in late July and include hiking in Rebun Island. Please send mail to me at marslai@yahoo.com or ICQ#9171021 to discuss. I will go wwoofing in Japan after this and I go alone.
